Photo a Day – Jasmine Blooms
And when the Jasmine blooms around here, I definitely know spring is near. I wish you could smell this photo because it’s glorious. Mmm…
I took this photo toward the end of the afternoon when the light was soft. I boosted the curves in Photoshop and then also added a boost to the color. Then I added a vignette to bring out the white of the flower and sharpened the Jasmine and the leaves immediately surrounding it to make it pop even more.

Very beautiful image.
I really like your manipulation. You didn’t go overboard, but you did just enough to enhance the image and bring out it’s best qualities.

Thanks, TImothy! I can’t say that I don’t go overboard with editing sometimes though.

Amy you inspire me. I have a D40x- and also take pictures in my backyard… I love your jasmine bloom.

The defintion is awesome in this! Beautiful shot. I’m a newbie, so this may seem like a silly question to you, but is that Adobe Photoshop you’re talking about? I’m trying to get started in photography and I wondered what photoshop is a must.

@Christi – In this case, Photoshop is in fact Adobe Photoshop, however there are lots of great options for image editing that will cost you nothing (GIMP or Paint.NET) or very little (Adobe Photoshop Elements or my new favorite Mac app, Acorn). Most programs use similar tools to get the work done, so the skills you’ll learn with one application often can transfer to another.
Of course, nothing can beat Adobe Photoshop in terms of features and availability of plugins, actions and brushes. It’s a hefty investment, but worth it if you’re looking to do professional work.

What? No scratch ‘n sniff?
Beautiful image, and I can almost smell that sweet jasmine. I really appreciate the contrast. Such a vibrant green!

Thank you all! In looking through my archives, you can tell I’m a big fan of flower shots, too!
