History, the Election and Flickr
With the election less than a week away and history about to be made, the tension in the air is palpable.
Now, I’m about as “political” as I am “religious”. I believe you can’t have a very good life without Faith in something on a higher plane than just mankind and I firmly believe in government, I just don’t have a lot of passion for either Politics or Religion and find that some times the lines between Politics and Government and Faith and Religion get too blurred for their own good.
Whether it’s Barack Obama or John McCain, there will be an historical-first made with this election as either a Woman (Sarah Palin) or an “African-American” will be elected into office.
“African-American” is a term I hate by the way… you notice that nobody is calling Sarah Palin a “Female -American” or some other divisive term. I have an idea… how ’bout we call us all just “Americans” and ignore all the factions that would have us use terms like “African-American” and “Asian-American” that try to divide all Americans into separate camps. United we stand, as it were… but I digress.
Quite a while ago, while tooling around in Flickr, I noticed there was a Flickr-feed for someone calling themselves “Barack Obama”, so I made them one of my contacts and have been getting a photo-feed of his entire campaign.
Now, I assume that Senator Obama isn’t sitting up at night uploading photos everyday on his Powerbook or he even has any idea that I’m one of his contacts (at last count there were 7,100 of us), but I’m assuming the photos (and a lot of “snapshots”) are from his campaign people, and they’ve given me a view of his entire campaign.
I’ve tried to find a similar feed for John McCain’s camp, but so far no success.
I marvel at today’s technology (and the efficiency of the Obama campaign) that I can have my very own live photo-feed of a Presidential-race. Would have been cool to have this for President Kennedy’s campaign.
I have RSS feeds for all the latest news on the race and photo-feeds through Flickr, more info than I can possibly use and some of it even truthful. Pretty amazing stuff and a lot of it thanks to the benefits of digital-photography and the computer age.
Now I won’t bash you about the head and tell you how important the American government is and that it’s truly a marvel for how long ago it was put into action and how all of the sacrifices that were made to keep it going weren’t in vain. You already know that.
But I will tell you to get out there and take photos! Maybe I’ll even make you a Flickr contact and you’ll become President of this great nation.

I agree, Jim. I think it’s awesome that Obama has a flickr feed, even if he is not directly involved in the actually taking and uploading of photos. It’s great to be able to follow along! From YouTube to Flickr to Facebook, politicians are getting more and more savvy about using online media to their advantage. It’s cool to watch!

Hey Ya Amy! Ya, pretty soon the candidates will be in your living-room as holograms, chatting at you incessantly while you try and watch HBO!
I’m glad you’re enjoying the technological-progress (?) and the history being made…history and the future, quite a combo.

Oh, one very important point I left out but I meant to make…even with the Economy being so high on everybody’s radar, I hope whoever gets into office doesn’t forget about all our troops overseas.
