Year In Pictures: Reflections And Rule Of Thirds

YIP ~ Day 277

I am so behind on posting my Year in Pictures photos here. Life definitely gets in the way sometimes, and I haven’t had a lot of time to spend composing shots that I’m really proud of. But I needed something different in my house to shoot a couple nights ago and came up with an image I really liked.

I had forgotten about this little guy we have sitting on the counter, bowing so patiently and courteously. I love his reflection on that shiny tile, which helps to emphasize the rule of thirds being played out. For those of you not familiar with this rule in photography, imagine the photo being divided into thirds horizontally and also into thirds vertically. Studies have shown that people’s eyes tend to go first to the points where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect, so placing points of interest there will help to create a more balanced photo and one that is naturally pleasing to the eye.

Responses and Conversations

Love this shot as I am a great fan of using reflections in my own work. I am constantly on the look out for reflections in water etc and often get funny looks when pointing my camera doen at a puddle.

Any way great shot

Thanks, Kate! And great site.

ROT is the assignment for my class this week. Always a fun challenge to ‘teach’.
