It’s Here…

Just picked up my new Canon G10 tonight.

I’ll let you know how it works.

Congratulations! We have a G9 in my office and it’s a beast!
Did you know that huge “aerial” night shot of Shanghai in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’s China issue was shot with a G9? This G10 must be even more ridiculous - enjoy.

Thanks Chris!
I had forgotten about that shot, I’ll have to go back and check out the Geo photo! So far I’ve only started to learn some of the functions on the G10, but at 800 ISO (on Auto-Hi ISO) the shots looked pretty good on the awesome 3″screen.
The wide-angle lens is most appreciated and the stabilization works quite well.
My favorite features are all the dials for getting to important functions quickly (like ISO) and even though I’m a NIkon DSLR type of guy, the menus are quite intuitive once they’re learned.
The quick start-up and fairly quick shutter speeds make me anxious to get out there and start trying it out for “street photography” which is why I bought it.
Thanks for the comments, Chris!

I look forward to hearing about your experience with the G10. I want to get my wife a good Point & Shoot for Christmas this year and have been leaning heavily toward a G-Series Canon.

Thanks, John!
So far, having shot about 25 “pictures” with the G10 (just fooling around and getting used to the interface), I’d be hard pressed not to recommend it.
If your wife is the type of photographer who can appreciate all the dials and buttons (instead of the commands being buried in the menu hierarchy ) then this would be a good, responsive camera for her.
If she’s more of the “leave it on Auto” type (not at all a bad thing, just a different style), then you could possibly get away with a less pricey model of Canon point & shoot.
It’s built like a tank (meaning “heavyish” and isn’t the smallest camera out there, so “purseability” might be a concern.
So far I’m impressed with the relatively intuitive menus and dials (again, I’m arriving via many years of using DSLRs) and the handling and responsiveness of the camera.
The build-quality seems first-rate and, hopefully soon, I’ll get some photos up to show you the picture quality.
I’ve read on the internet that this was the most “pre-ordered” camera and I noticed last night that Amazon had an “availability warning” on their site, so if you’re serious about Christmas, it might be worthwhile to get in line to buy one soon.
