Year In Pictures: Did You Guess Clock?
If you guessed Grandfather clock as the mystery shot in my last post for the Getting in Close: Guess What It Is contest, you were right. Here’s a more clear view of it. Still close up, but at least you can tell what it is in this photo. My husband’s dad made this clock with his own hands. It really is stunning. The craftsmanship that goes into making something like this never ceases to amaze me.
This was shot with my Nikon 50mm f/1.8D Lens in very low light, getting as close as I could so I could still focus and shoot up from below. Tricky with a lens that doesn’t auto-focus on a D40x body!
Remember, if you’re not a Flickr member, you can still be included in the contest. Just leave us a link in the comments to your photo and we’ll count that as a submission.

A shame the 50mm doesn’t focus on the D40x. Nikon really didn’t do photographers a favor there. Nice shot though!

Cool shot, Amy! I have the same problem with my 50mm f/1.8 and my Nikon D70s body. Usually, it’s not a problem, but when shooting squirmy babies or super up close shots, it can be a irritating.

Thanks, John and Steph! Yes, it is a shame the 50mm lenses don’t auto-focus on some Nikons. I pretty much mostly shoot manual focus anyway, but it would really be nice to at least have the option to auto-focus sometimes.
