“Aye Matey, I Have Yer Close-Up Right Here!”

Arrrggghhh, close-in doesn’t only work for babies, it works for Pirates too!

Boney

Boney

While on a trip through San Pedro a couple of weekends ago, I happened into these merry men

and their wenches too.

Make no bones about it, yer gotta get in deeper than davey-jones locker to capture every last whisker on their faces.

Me’n'th’ crew seen a great grand sea beastie, th’ mother of all whales, aye!” Yer gotta have your aperture wide open and get in close.

Don’t be wary if they look at you and say “Yer a scurvy bilge rat, ya pompous gasbag!”

Focus on their eyes (or “eye” in some cases when wearing an eyepatch ), and make sure to focus on their Scrumpets too. Savvy?

So, get up and get out and get some shots of your favorite bildge-rat or “Show a leg!, it be dawn, you scurvy lubber!”. Get up, get shooting!

About Jim Dennewill

A Southern California native, Jim Dennewell has had a fascination with photography since elementary school. Weaned on his family's old Kodak Brownie cameras (you know, the ones where everything moves backwards in the viewfinder), Jim has fostered his love for the art and tech of photography over the years. Originally known here as "Slightly Out of Focus," Jim is one of our favorite authors.
