The Numbers Rackets

Because you might have missed his great posts the first time around, we’re republishing some of Jim’s greatest hits here on Tuesday and Thursdays. Originally posted May 14, 2006.

Number 3

New Number 3-Ruffles Potato Chip (Nikon D200 with a Nikon 1.8 50mm lens & Nikon bellows)

In an attempt to catch up to all of you people who’ve been submitting great Numbers Photos (mainly on Flickr… John…) my wife and I made an excursion to Shoreline Drive in Long Beach, CA (home of the Grand Prix, the Pike, the Queen Mary and other assorted diversions) to try and get some number-shots.

This is a good creative challenge, and we had a great time taking our Nikons around the area and seeing where we could find some numbers.

My wife was the “point-person” and had a great eye for the numbers game.

Zero1.jpg

We’ll start with this “zero” which was a planter with no plant in it…

2a.jpg

The “2″ was carved into the backrest of this coffee-house chair…

3a.jpg

Lots of ropes around the docks, and this one makes our “3″….

4a.jpg

Lots of sails and stuff, but this one worked the best as a “4″….

5a.jpg

The “5″ was a hinge welded onto a large electrical box…..

6a.jpg

Our first “6″ is a shadow from an overhead light…

6b.jpg

The next “6″ is a design carved into the front of a electronic game console….

7a.jpg

“7″’s were everywhere, this one being on the balcony of one of the shoreline condos….

7b.jpg

…and this “7″ was on the support structure of an elevator-shaft.

8a.jpg

Again, with lots of ropes and chains, “8″’s were everywhere, like in this shadow made by some chain-links.

8b.jpg

and here, Mr. Rope makes another figure-8 for our amusement.

8c.jpg

…a little more creative now, this open Porthole made a fine number 8.

9a.jpg

A little “gingerbread” atop a ticket-booth made a great number 9 (Number 9, number 9, number 9…I am the walrus…)

10b.jpg

a little stretch of the imagination, but this Hyatt post made for a Number 10…

10a.jpg

as did this drumstick and drumhead on a Taiko-drum game.

These were all taken with my Nikon D200 and Nikon 18-200mmVR zoom lens.

So, those are some numbers for now, all fun to take and a good mind-stretching exercise…to be continued!

Oh my gosh - you are amazing at this. VERY inspiring. I didn’t think some of these numbers existed just naturally like that. I stand corrected. OK, I better hurry up and get shooting!!

Thanks for this.

Great, I was hoping it’d get the DPbloggers going! the Flickr-ites are trouncing us at our own game. Glad you liked it, and I’m excited to see all the flickr-ites joining us again…it’s an exciting and creative world out there!

Great job, I need to get working on this.. don’t really have any yet. :-/

Come on in and join the fun, Mike, the more the merrier!

Yeah Jimmy, been trying to. :-) I found a few numbers yesterday, so I’m starting to get there!

Yeah, time is a rare commodity. We’ll be looking forward to seeing your numbers!
