Race on Monday, sell on Tuesday…
That’s not the way this old automotive adage usually goes, it’s usually “Race on Sunday, sell on Monday.” to indicate the great publicity that auto racing usually gives to the car manufacturers, but…
Going to the first of 2 annual NASCAR races at Fontana (now Auto Club) Raceway this year meant having to put up with rain delays through most of the weekend. Since I was lucky enough to be busy on Sunday, I decided to not try and go to the track and see if they would make-up the race on Monday. It worked out in my favor.
Monday was a beautiful day with not a drop of rain in the sky. The best part was, since a lot of the Sunday attendees had to be at work on Monday, the crowds were non-existent, I could have the run of the place. Cool.
The first race was to finish what was left of the Sprint Cup Race (not “sprints” in the modified sense, but sponsored by the phone guys) and it was a very good race. The new “Car of Tomorrow” was introduced to the Fontana track and they seemed to get along very well.
The eventual winner, Carl Edwards, drove around Jimmy Johnson and held on to the lead.
He did his traditional back-flip, then it on to the Stater Bros 300 race which was to have been held on Saturday.
This was a good race, but Tony Stewart took the lead and never gave it up. It turned into more of a single-file race than the Auto Club 500 was, but I think the Car of Tomorrow makes for more competitive racing. IMHO.
The usual yellow flags led to the usual pit mayhem, which always helps to bring the pack back together.
The weather was the usual noonday-high-contrast-bad-to-takes-pictures-in weather, but I shot a bunch anyway, because they didn’t want to rescedule the race for better photo-light.
A high ISO and some Vibration-reduction lenses and we were on our way.
All in all, a lot of fun, maybe the next race here will be on Monday too!
