So Long Fence

Fence 4 We’re back home in Los Angeles now and I said goodbye to my fence. On our last night in Spokane it snowed and snowed, clobbering me over the head with the Christmas spirit. Using Flickr Toys Mosaic maker, I gave honor to my fence by making some mosaics.

SpokaneI learned so much by shooting the same location over and over again. After 6 separate days of shooting one fence, I think I mastered how it should be photographed. I really got to know it. When all was said and done, I probably took 200 pictures ofPeace this fence from different angles, using different lenses and cameras, shooting during different times of day, and in different weather conditions. It’s a wonderful technique for shooting landscapes, and a great way to learn.

Me and my Fence It was an exercise in comedy as well. I only had about 20 minutes to shoot the fence in the snow before having to leave for the airport. Trouble was, it was 7am, and all my extra clothes were packed. My father-in-law took his snow boots off after shoveling the driveway and let me wear them so I wouldn’t have to fly with cold, wet feet. So there I was, shuffling through the snow wearing his size 11 clodhoppers. Thank you Jim for the shoes off your feet, and thank you and Karen for such an inspiring fence to photograph!
