Nikon to bring out a full-size sensor!

After years of saying that the DX (1.5 crop-factor) sensor was their focus, Nikon announced 2 new upcoming DSLRs.

<>From Nikonians comes the news of the 12 mp D-300 (to replace the D-200 no doubt) with the standard DX sensor and (here’s the shocker) a new D-3 (to replace the D2x etc) with a new “FX” sensor that is a full-size sensor.

No doubt Canon’s populairity at the top of the Pro-camera heap has spurred Nikon to join the fray (especially since Canon just announced a new top-of-the-line DSLR).

We’ll see if, when this camera is introduced, there’ll be a lot of used DX sized lenses turning up at places like KEH Camera or B&H used dept.

No telling when these cameras will turn up on the street, but hopefully it’ll be a lot quicker than when the D-200 (or the popular 18-200mm VR lens) were introduced.

Calumet says “a November shipping-date is expected…” (with the new Canons due to ship in September).

Cheeck out the specs:

<>“Nikon D3
The result of years of development and feedback from professional photographers, the D3 combines many innovative Nikon technologies. These include an exclusive 12.1 effective megapixel FX format image sensor (36.0×23.9mm) with 12-channel readout, a blazing-fast 9 fps frame rate, expandable ISO settings from 200-6400, a completely new 51-Point autofocus system, a 3″ VGA LCD screen with Live View …”

<>”Live view” and 6400ISO??? Way too cool!

<>

<>Nikon also announced some nice, new lenses to come as well.

Very cool. I wonder what this will do to the D200 prices?

Well, the D-200 didn’t do all that much for the D-70 prices, but maybe the D-200 will replace the D-70/D-80 at that price point. It’d be an even better bargain then.
Of course, I still want a D3……

By the way, I saw where Adorama is offering a $100 “instant rebate” to D-200s, so maybe the price dropping has begun!

[...] Jim beat me to it, but Nikon announced a new D-3 DSLR with a full frame sensor.  I guess they figured out people actually wanted to buy these.  Also go new D-300. [...]
