Lighthouse

Horizontal I went to Long Beach Harbor a couple of weeks ago and took a bunch of shots of the lighthouse there. It was right in the middle of the day, so the light was really boring, glarey, and bright with virtually no shadows, but I was there so I took pictures, of course. I played with them a little in Picasa, Google’s free and awesome photo editing software (more on Verticalthat later in the week), and here are the two best pics.

In lieu of some pretty light, I concentrated on composition, hoping I could monkey around with the images in post production to make them more interesting in the lighting department. Playing with verticals and horizontals seemed the best way to go. I framed the black & white shot between a pair of palm trees on the boardwalk. The horizontal shot benefits from the letterboxing, and there’s even a movie crew at the bottom left of the frame. I’d like to go back at sunset with my SLR (these were taken with my Canon point-and-shoot) and take some more pictures with prettier light. Someday.
