The New Diaper Bag Camera - Nikon S200

s200 We finally settled on a new Diaper Bag Camera (DBC because acronyms makes it sound more important and technical). It’s been sorely missed and about time we finally picked one. Here’s what we were looking for:

  • Small - It’s for the diaper bag, what did you expect? Also, I, personally, wanted something that would fit comfortably in my pocket.
  • Decent image quality - Knowing something this small wasn’t going to compete with my Nikon D70 going in, but we wanted something that would at least be usable above ISO 50.
  • Tough - We needed something that could survice hanging out in a diaper bad, which gets tossed and dropped all the time.
  • Rechargeable batteries - It had to come with a rechargeable battery and charger.
  • SD/CF memory - We really didn’t want to go down the road of xD or such.
  • Sub $200 - If it’s entering a server environment, and who can say the diaper bag isn’t, it must be easily replaceable.

We was tempted to go with Canon A550 for $135, but the grip gave it a form factor that wouldn’t accommodate the pocket-ability we were looking for. The higher end Canon’s are great, but the cost was higher than we wanted.

At the end, we narrowed it down to a Nikon S200 or Olympus Stylus 760, partly because they (mostly) fit the list and partly because my brother could get us a deal. In the end, the Nikon won for the following reasons for best fitting the requirement list. I won’t go into the details, as there’s plenty of technical reviews out there, but I’ll post a personal review when it gets here.
