Day 29: Old Signs and Sepia — A Winning Combo
I love old signs. I drive past the Rose Bowl from time to time and always slow down to appreciate the cool old sign out front. It makes me wish I were around to see Southern California back in the 1920s when the stadium was built. What a different time.
I took this photo with my point-and-shoot out the window of my car. (Don’t worry, I pulled over first!) I loved the blue sky, green palm trees and green/red sign in the original (pictured below), but I couldn’t get past how fun this photo was in sepia tone (picture above). It has such an old-timey feel!
What I’m finding with photographs of old signs is that if you want to give them a timeless feel, you might have to edit out some of the modern day details. (See Chris’ photo of an old car wash sign near our home from last year’s 30 Day Photo Challenge for an example. He so wished he could have had more time to set up the shot without the power lines.)
In my final image, I ended up clone stamping out some advertisements on the sign and a couple gate numbers, just so your focus was immediately on the big old sign.
I really like the warm way the photo turned out.

Hey girl. I am having a blast going through your archives! First, your photos have just gotten better and better. I found my way over here after you posted little S. on the swing and you talked about the grass thing with Adobe. I’m sure you understand that my desire to improve my photography skills stems from the new little joy in my life. Suddenly I was asking D. about lighting and resolution and angle and whatnot. I’m having a blast shooting tons of photos. Some are better than others, but mostly they are just adorable because of the subject. I’m learning a lot about adobe from your sight and while we have PS CS, I think I’d have more courage with PS elements. It seems like the every(woman)’s program. I’d love to learn how to do that stamping thing. It really cleans up your photos. Anyways, sorry for the looong comment, but just wanted you to get a proper Savage salute on your wonderful work here! XOXO
