Photographing Clothing

Sweater I’ve been on a knitting jag this winter. I’m working on my fourth sweater since the beginning of the year and there are no signs of my slowing down. I cannot, however, take credit for this great sweater Chloe is wearing (bought for her by Gran at April Cornell). But I was thinking about the best ways to photograph knitting projects and other garments. Here are my suggestions:

Back of the Sweater 1 ) Cut your subject’s head off slightly (not like Marie Antoinette). This is a common trick in fashion photography. By slightly cropping the subject’s head, the focus goes on the garment and not the model’s face.

2) Shoot your garment in soft, diffused light. Even light will flatter the garment best.

3) Shoot against a non-distracting background. You don’t want anything to take away from the garment or the photograph in general. If you choose a long lens, the background will go more out of focus and bring the attention to the clothing. For more on lenses, click (here).
