The Bizzard of ‘07 (or how SoCal turned into SnowCal)

As a kid I remember hearing stories of events that occoured at or near the turn of the century (1900’s). They’d always refer to the events as “the war of ‘06″ or the “storm of ‘08″ and it always seemed so far away.

Well, Southern California was hit with a storm (the Arctic Express they call them because the cold winds blow down out of the Arctic) yesterday that brought snow levels down to 1000 feet elevation. Man was it cold (for us)!

After a dark and stormy night,

the neighborhood was covered in snow.

Now I know that for many of you, a day at Zero-degrees F is not at all unusual for this time of year, but, c’mon, this is Southern California! Why just a week ago we had days in the mid to high 70s.

Snow and Palm trees just doesn’t go.

It blew in fiercely out of the north and snow was everywhere…

The construction crews, trying to get the last phase of houses done were bundled up and tried their best to work on whatever they could…

The kids were walking to school as surprised as anybody that they were able to walk thru a winter-wonderland!

The snow and the SoCal palm trees made for an interesting dichotomy…

The local kids tried their best to make the most of this most unexpected snowfall…

As the sun came out, it illuminated the scene and brightened up the snow covered landscape.

As the day went on, the snow was disappearing rapidly, even our nearby “Lil’ Matterhorn” was losing it’s snow-cap pretty quickly..

By early afternoon, the mountain across the street was almost bare…

By sunset, thigs were almost back to normal , and aided by the clouds, we had some most spectacular sunsets.

Tonite it’s supposed to be around 26-degrees F, so we’ll see if we wake up to another snow-covered landscape!

Hehe, a few inches of snow a blizzard? I guess I have no concept of what it’s like to live out west/south, as I’ve lived up north all my life. We haven’t had any snow yet this year - kind of disappointing. Nice collection of photos, tell the story well!

Thanks, Mike! obviously toung-in-cheek (like the news here when it broadcasts ‘STORMWATCH!!!” and we’re getting an inch of rain…), but I did spend a few years in Pennsylvania, so I’ve seen cold (but never a blizzard). I can’t imagine Rochester or the mid-west. I’ll never again move east of Arizona or North of Fresno!

By-the-by, I do have to mention my friend Gary Krasner. Now he grew up in Rhode Island and he knows from cold!
