More On My Sick Nikon D70 Camera
So yesterday I posted about my sick D70. This is just a follow-up post to explain the past problems. After a few weeks of owning the D70, I realized it might have the somewhat common backfocus problem that seemed to plague new DSLR camera bodies a few years ago (Canon and Nikon both had issues). I took it in and they fixed it under warranty. From what I read, it should have been a simple calibration. When looking at the invoice, it said the camera required “major repairs” and “significant component replacement”. Seemed a bit odd to me, but oh well, the fix was free.Â
The second time I brought it in was because it was getting a little flaky in terms of power. I brought it in and they fixed it for free without any questions. This was weird as it was out of warranty. When the nice lady helping at the service counter looked up my camera, she said “Ohhh…” and said the repair was free. Thinking about it now, I should have asked some questions at that point. Again, it required “major repairs” and “significant component replacement”.
So now my D70 is sick again and I’m left to wonder what’s going to happen. I have since found out my previous repairs were most likely around $500 repairs. So I’m left to believe I got a lemon. There have been a number of other little quirks, but I’ve not bothered to fix them as they’re relatively painless.
I’m crossing my fingers that this repair is going to be less expensive. And if not, I hope Nikon will cover it again. But what if Nikon doesn’t? I’m really not ready to dish out hundreds of dollars on a camera that is significantly out of date (nevermind that it stills takes great photos). But I’m also not ready to open up my wallet for the D200 (the camera I’d end up getting). I guess I just need to wait and see what the damage is.

Good luck! Nikon’s usually pretty good about such things, let’s hope they like you….
