Getting There is Half the Fun
Summer vacations are so great. We just took our 10-month-old daughter on a plane for the first time to head for a vacation on the island of Kauai. Just being in Kauai gets me excited about all the amazing photo opportunities that come with a beautiful tropical beach location! But I also want to remind you all as you set out for your upcoming vacations: don’t forget to photograph the journey, too. Because there is nothing better than telling a story about an amazing family vacation than starting your photo set with snapshots of your kid’s first plane ride (or cross country road trip, or however else your journey begins).
The journey tells so much about the vacation. So even if you don’t devote a lot of space on the memory card for this part of the trip, be sure you don’t skip documenting it completely.
The journey sets the stage. It tells the beginning of the story. In our case, it shows a snapshot of our lives as parents — experiencing something for the first time through the eyes of our child.

It’s also a snapshot of our daughter’s life on the verge of toddlerhood –
playing . . .

being entertained . . .

snacking . . .

and just general boredom.

But all of this got us ready to deal with a baby on vacation for a week. If you can survive the 5-hour flight, you can survive anything!

[...] We took Sophia on her first airplane ride on Friday. We’re off to the beautiful island of Kauai for a much needed family vacation! Sophia fared well on the trip over. I was a little worried, as it’s a five-hour flight. But the flight attendant totally hooked us up and offered the man who was supposed to sit next to us a new seat up front. It was kind of a no-brainer — the window seat of the very last row of the plane next to a squirmy baby or an aisle in bulkhead. Yep, he was out of there faster than you can say, “Sorry, sir. I think there’s a Cheerio stuck to your cheek.” So the lanky Fraziers spread out all of our long limbs in an extra seat. Check here for more photos of the trip. [...]

Stephanie – I took John’s advice about acting all flustered and inexperienced. Well – it wasn’t an act, but it totally worked in terms of helping the guy next to us picture what the rest of his trip was going to be like if he didn’t move to a more roomy location. Heh.
