Waterproof Disposable Cameras
I bought a disposable underwater camera recently. It was super cheap ($8.50 at Target) and I was psyched to see what kind of pictures it would take. It is ASA 800 and what I found is that the above-ground shots were very grainy due to the high ASA. No surprise there, but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the images taken under water. I would really recommend this camera for underwater swimming pool shots but not for other daylight shots. I wonder how it would do in the ocean.
Does anyone else have fun underwater shots they would like to share? If so, please post your shots to the DP Blogs Flickr Group and tag them with DPBlogsUnderwater.

Those look very good for a disposable camera! I actually thought they looked a little bit like a lomo.. Awesome! I’ll have to grab one of these the next time I go to a place with a pool.

I’m just curious where you got the pictures developed? They look great, but back when I used film (so long ago!) I had a definite preference of where to get things developed, but that place closed. Any hints?

I got these developed at CVS pharmacy and instead of prints, got a photo disc. I, too, usually have preferences for developing. For stuff like this, CVS or Target work fine. (In this case, the CVS has been open for less than a month, so their equipment is brand spanking new). For more critical photography (paid work, artsy shots, things I know I’ll want to blow up), I take my shots to Samy’s Camera and shell out for the pricey high-resolution CD.
I was thinking about the graininess of these images and was wondering how much of it is the high ASA and how much might be processing technique. I might do an experiment. For my next batch of underwater shots, I’ll take them to Samy’s and see if there’s a significant difference.
As for regular prints, I love ordering from Flickr and picking up at Target. They do a surprisingly good job, and I’ve never had any issues with the quality of my prints.
Hey Mike, I was thinking these had a bit of a Lomo quality, too. It’s the high contrast look.

Yes, and the colors are so vibrant!
By the way, you asked to hear more about how I made “Car Crash”..? A post on that is coming tomorrow (July 20) at six o’clock.
