Letters and Numbers in Nature: The Butterfly Alphabet
This is so cool. Recently one of our favorite blogs, Parent Hacks, ran a story about the Butterfly Alphabet. Smithsonian naturalist, lecturer and photographer Kjell “Shell” Sandved has been photographing letters and numbers that appear naturally on butterfly wings for the past 24 years. Visit the website and check out all the resulting products yourself — from the poster shown here to butterfly wing letters spelling your kids’ names.
Simply amazing! And just the inspiration I need right now during our 10 Numbers project on DP Blogs this month. But let’s face it, the guy has had 24 years to get these cool shots. I’ve only got one month. I better start searching if I’m actually ever going to find a 5!

That’s awesome. Think of how long that must have taken to collect!
