What Convinced You To Go Digital?

I used to be a fillm guy. (Well, weren’t we all.) I held on to it as long as I could. I fought the good fight and swore I’d never go digital until they had 22 megapixel cams for under a grand. Well, here I am all digital, now. I finally gave in to the nagging feeling of need for a new toy. I’d like to say it was the result of some scientific explanation, or maybe I read a new article on why digital is better. But it was nothing like that. I just started to get an itch. I mean, all my friends had digital! So there it is. That’s why I went digital. Now, since I made the change I’ve found a new love for photography and a new respect for digital. I’m more than happy to have gone digital. So much that I even sold all my film equipment.
So. Why did you go digital?

Responses and Conversations

One reason I went digital is because it’s SO much cheaper. I mean, ultimately, I don’t have as many prints in my hands as I did with film (I’m really bad about printing them out), but I can take as many as I want (dozens at a time!) and maybe get the one good one I was looking for. Perfect for a parent of a squirmy little kid. And that’s the main reason!

Like making love in the backseat of a car, it was for instant gratification. Even with my first digicam (a SONY Mavica HiBand still camera that recorded onto little (1.25 inch) floppies), I could get my pictures into my mac 512 a lot faster than with film (I tried to stuff the negatives in the slots on top of the computer, but that didn’t work).
Then I didn’t have to wait a week to find out I’d really screwed up all 36 of my exposures. Disillusionment was only a few minutes away!

Because I am cheap. Like Amy I find digital way cheaper. I used to take like 10 films of pictures to get about 10 decent shots, but of course had to have them all developed. The instant feedback you get from digital makes you learn more and faster too I find.

I love the instant gratification factor (and I, too, am cheap). I still like the look and softness of film way better, though. In some ways, I miss film. I miss thinking about f/stops and using my light meters (I have a Minolta Spotmeter F, a Minolta Autometer IV and a plain old Seconic). I love my light meters. But I haven’t shot a frame of film in 6 months. Guess I’m a digital girl now.

Great question, John!
