Picture of the Day 29 – Aztec Hotel
At the tail end of Route 66 is a crazy hotel called the Aztec. It’s a bedraggled hotel with a bar inside called the Brass Elephant, a cheezy but fun place that sports bands and Karaoke. It’s across the store from my grocery store in Monrovia so I made a pitstop and made this shot.
I took this picture with my Nikon D70s digital camera on a 180mm lens. I futzed with it in Photoshop a bit to bring in a little more contrast and to eliminate a power line across the frame.
I’d like to make a study of this hotel and take shots at different times of day. There are so many angles. Groovy place.

Alas, I’m told that they’re planning to close the Brass Elephant due to ongoing problems with some ruffians. What will become of Phyllis? Will she work at the 19th Dimension?

WHAT?! Close the BRASS? Not possible! How in the world will I survive without it?! Where will I karaoke?! (Not that I’ve been anytime recently) I guess it isn’t as cool and Dive-bar-ish as when Kemal and I used to hang out there… but STILL – POOR PHYLLIS!!! She cannot work at the 23rd Dimension!

I saw a California’s Gold episode about the renovation of the Aztec and apparently the owners are ABSOLUTELY (the owner kept saying “absolutely” during the interview) attempting to restore the place to some of it’s old-time glory. Last time I was there I was dropping off a questionable fellow to pick up some questionable goods from some questionable residents. One can only hope that the place has got some life left in it.
