Day 33-VooDoo Daddy

Must be the phases of the moon or something, but these masks were asking to have their photo taken.

Bon Dieu, mon ami, along with Damballah, Elizi, and Legba compelled my camera to get up on it’s tripod and take this image.

Voodoo Daddy

The large mask was purchased from a tall, thin, quiet gentleman in the South of France at an open-market. The seller had a gleem in his eye as he handed me the ceremonial masque.

The other two faces were given to me by my sister (Thanks, Betty!) and thus, form a triad of mystical healing spirits.

On certain nights, you can see their eyes glow and the smiles get a little brighter. As the night-dancing progresses, and the spirits move closer, you can feel them turn good words into good deeds.

On this night, being lit by a Coleman lantern and my trusty Popular-Science flashlight, I caught these three at their very best. Using my Nikon D200, Nikon 18-200 VR lens, Manfrotto tripod (praise the 3-legged god Manfrotto!!!), the spirits were saved for eternity.

About Jim Dennewill

A Southern California native, Jim Dennewell has had a fascination with photography since elementary school. Weaned on his family's old Kodak Brownie cameras (you know, the ones where everything moves backwards in the viewfinder), Jim has fostered his love for the art and tech of photography over the years. Originally known here as "Slightly Out of Focus," Jim is one of our favorite authors.
