Hollywood Glamour Photographer
One of my all-time favorite photographers is George Hurrell. I was looking through one of my books about him today and was struck again by his talent. Not only did he find the perfect angle for every star, but he was a master of re-touching. All skintones were flawless and glowing and there was never a hair out of place. I mean, this is what it meant to be a movie star in the Forties. While I was at Art Center College of Design, I took a series of Hurrell-style glamour shots of an actress I knew. It was a huge challenge because he used such large and hard light sources to get the deep shadows. But faces usually look HORRIBLE with that kind of light. That’s where the re-touching came in. I just found the negatives for my Hurrell shoot, so I’ll see if I can have them transferred to digital. Now that I know more about Photoshop, maybe I can refine the shots even more. Here are some more Hurrell shots:
