Day 10…already?

Man, this photo-a-day thing is crankin’! It also must be the place for old signs like Chris’ Carwash, and BadDog’s funky old piece.

Day10-EAT

I took this one today in the town of Keene, right down the freeway from Tehachapi in Kern County California.

There’s a cool place to EAT called the Keene Cafe. You used to see these signs everywhere imploring you to Eat. I guess that if they made them big-enough, you’d start salivating as you drive by, and would immediately want to pull over and get some burgers and fries.
This is also the turn-off for the Tehachapi Loop which is know to train-buffs the world over. I even met a couple of guys in Perth Australia that asked my if I’d ever seen the “loop”. Any day of the week you’ll see photographers out there taking pictures of the trains chuugging up the Tehachapi mountains. The loop was built to make it possible for the trains to get up the mountain and, as such, it’s an engineering marvel.

I took this with my Nikon D200 and my Nikon 18-200 VR lens (the one I’m NOT going to give to John….). Handheld, no filters. Brought it into Photoshop to down sample, and pump up the saturation a bit.

About Jim Dennewill

A Southern California native, Jim Dennewell has had a fascination with photography since elementary school. Weaned on his family's old Kodak Brownie cameras (you know, the ones where everything moves backwards in the viewfinder), Jim has fostered his love for the art and tech of photography over the years. Originally known here as "Slightly Out of Focus," Jim is one of our favorite authors.

I’ve always loved the “EAT” and “EATS” signs, just because of the imperative nature of the things. “You will EAT!” “He or she who has driven by EATS!” And my favorite, the plural… “Come experience those comestibles known only as EATS!!!”

Old Navy needs signs like these that say, “WEAR”.

EATS was always my favorite too. I’m glad they didn’t use such descriptive phrases for the roadside restrooms!
