Day 6-Leaf me alone….

Another busy day, another quickie-picture. At least the sun was out so John won’t whine about us not going out in the rain. Since I didn’t have any babies or dogs to shoot, and plants seem to be an easy target, I looked around for a quick subject.
I spied the plant my wife had placed in front of the window with the obscure-glass. The sun was shining from behind it and gave it a nice warm glow.

Day 6

I broke out my D200 and my 105mm Micro-Nikkor, and got it ready. Now, since the plant was lit from behind…and I didn’t want a silhouette, I broke out the Calumet gold-reflector and set it up on my Calumet disc-holder.

This set-up the inside of the plant to at least show some detail. Next I broke out some red fome-core and placed that to the left of the plant.

Wanting to diffuse the background glass as much as possible, I set the f-stop fairly wide to around 6.3. Since it was fairly dark, and I didn’t want to bring out my flash, I cranked the ISO up to 320.

I asked the plant to hold still and smile…and that’s all I have to say about that.

About Jim Dennewill

A Southern California native, Jim Dennewell has had a fascination with photography since elementary school. Weaned on his family's old Kodak Brownie cameras (you know, the ones where everything moves backwards in the viewfinder), Jim has fostered his love for the art and tech of photography over the years. Originally known here as "Slightly Out of Focus," Jim is one of our favorite authors.
